My career has been a series of spontaneous decisions, saying yes to opportunities that felt right at the time. I’ve never had a well-thought-out plan, just a series of experiences that helped me figure out what to pursue.
I’ve always admired people who have clear goals and passions. Simon Sinek’s quote really resonates with me:
“Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.”
For the past few years, I’ve been on a mission to discover my purpose. I’ve tried everything from creative projects to launching small businesses, but nothing has fully clicked yet. So, I focus on finding meaning in my current role. That’s where the magic currently happens for me.
This week, I’ve been reflecting on how powerful it is to have a clear purpose. Believing one day, clarity will spark for me too.
Read: Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
This book is a beautiful exploration of the deep bond between two friends, Sam Masur and Sadie Green, who connect over their love for video games. It highlights the artistry and impact of video games as a medium for storytelling and connection.
Their journey to create a video game together is driven by shared passion and support for each other. Despite the sacrifices, their purpose transforms their passion project into a successful game development company.
So Wat? action: Nervous to go alone? Find a shared passion with a friend. Schedule regular meet-ups to brainstorm and work on a small project. Keep each other accountable, share the load and celebrate the joy of connection.
Heard: Girls that Invest
Simran Kaur started Girls That Invest to make investing less intimidating for women and minorities. She noticed a gap in the market and created content that’s easy to understand, stripping away the jargon from investing and entrepreneurship.
Simran’s success shows how powerful it is to build a community around a clear purpose and genuinely believe in it.
So Wat? action: Having a clear purpose is key to keeping your interest alive and achieving long-term success. Without it, early interest might fade quickly.Watched: AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders
I’ve been hooked following aspiring cheerleaders competing for one of 36 coveted spots on the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders team. Despite challenges like fair pay issues, injuries, and pressurised beauty standards, these women are laser-focused on their goal.
Their determination simplifies decision-making. Every action is taken in pursuit to achieve the goal. And knock-backs are just “not right now” not a no.
So Wat? action: Channel your inner cheerleader. Your goal may not want to be a DCC but whether at work or in life you may have something niggling you want to go for but haven’t acted on it yet. Stop overthinking. Commit to one action towards your goal each week. Start small and watch it grow. Start there and watch it grow.
Wore: Navy Grey Wollen Jumper
I’m trying to be more mindful about my clothing purchases. Looking for brands that care about their impact on the planet and create lasting items. Navy Grey is a perfect example, working towards long-term sustainability and considering every aspect of their supply chain.
Wearing a wool jumper in summer might seem odd, but it was perfect for my recent trip back home to bonnie Scotland.
So Wat? action: Navy Grey summarise it perfectly; do things in a regenerative way to make the world better. So when making your next purchase, think about why you’re buying it, who the supplier is, and the longevity of the piece. Small, thoughtful decisions add up to make a big difference.
Holding Myself Accountable: practicing what I preach, each week I’m setting myself a So Wat? action.
So Wat? action: Taking time out to define my 'Why.' Would love to hear your tips on how you've achieved it!
