Is it important to understand your best friend's job? Can you support them better if you do? Or is ignorance bliss, instead offering a listening ear and general advice?
As we hit our 30s, our friends' jobs are getting more diverse—teachers, lawyers, tech consultants, strategists. We recently spent an evening together explaining our jobs, why we do them, and what's next. It was eye-opening, informative, and gave me real pride in what my friends have achieved. These friendships might not match the in-depth knowledge of work peers, but they offer a fresh perspective, which can be incredibly helpful.
Sometimes we search for role models outside our network (guilty), forgetting the amazing people right in front of us. What stood out to me was how we could help each other by learning from each other's skills—from social media to people management to the language of the next-gen workforce (still figuring out what "sigma" means). As someone who wants to start a business one day, my friends' achievements are the inspiration I need. They’ll be my biggest cheerleaders and knowledge sources when the day comes.
So, this week, I’m skipping the usual Read, Watch, Heard and going with a different So Wat action?
So Wat action? Make time for your friends. Step out of your daily grind, share your career journey, and listen intently to theirs. Learn what they enjoy, their achievements, and what they aim to do next. Your life will feel richer for it, and you'll know your support network is just a call away.
Wore: Silk PJs
For my career presentation, I wore my favourite silk PJs—comfy for WFH, stylish for video calls. Despite the trend of silk sets in public, I haven’t been brave enough to wear them out. But my friends loved my outfit and boosted my confidence to be bolder in my style.
So Wat action? Remember the power of compliments. Genuine positivity can make someone's day, even those confident in their style. It might be a moment for you, but it can have a lasting positive impact on them.
Stay tuned for more insights, tips & inspiration. And follow to see if I wear my PJS to work next week?
