Last year, I became obsessed with securing tickets to Taylor Swift. I was that girl, frantically refreshing pages and joining every waitlist possible. Boring my work colleagues with my endless chit-chat. Hunting out other Swifties in meetings to learn their tips.
Why? Because I craved connection with like-minded people, who believe in authenticity, kindness and championing each other. But equally like to dance to her music. Swift's music has been my constant companion. Her relentless release of songs has been the soundtrack of my 30s. One album can make me cry, smile, and feel like I can conquer the world, all in one listen.
On Saturday, I'll be at her concert, standing beside my Sis. Wearing matching outfits, singing loudly and most importantly swapping bracelets (she may regret giving me her spare ticket now). And for that moment, hoping the heaviness of the outside world will fade and let the positivity take over.
Listening to songs on repeat, I’ve curated a list of my favourite lyrics which inspire me to feel empowered and provide lessons on the process of becoming stronger and more confident.
“And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake. I shake it off, I shake it off (hoo-hoo-hoo).”
Dealing with negativity and criticism is something we all face. From an annoying slack message to a presentation that didn’t go as planned, when I need cheered up, this song is my go-to. I turn it up and dance —it’s my way of pressing reset and taking back control.
So Wat? action: Find your personal "shake it off" move. Whether it’s hitting the gym, baking cookies or diving into a favourite book, find what makes you happy. It’s all about doing what works for you to keep things in perspective.
“Never be so kind, you forget to be clever. Never be so clever, you forget to be kind.”
I constantly find myself balancing on this tightrope. As someone who likes to volunteer, I can sometimes stretch myself too thin or focus on tasks supporting a wider team goal but not always my own career prospects.
So Wat? action: When making decisions to take on something extra, consider the impact. Ideally finding the sweet spot where both can be achieved.
For example, supporting a team member to develop their skills is undoubtedly kind. However, if it means doing their work for them and not getting the recognition you deserve, it might not be the smartest move.
“I cry a lot, but I am so productive; it’s an art. You know you’re good when you can even do it with a broken heart.”
When life gets tough, work has been my sanctuary. It’s where I feel safe, in control and capable. Showing up and being productive has given me the confidence to face what is happening outside of work. Unlike Taylor Swift, not everyone knows the details of my personal life, and that anonymity can be a blessing.
However, I’m not advocating this approach for everyone, its about finding what works for you.
So Wat? action: Take time to recognise your own safe places, especially when life throws you something unexpected. Find the activity or environment where you feel ok. Remember, it’s not about ignoring your feelings but finding a balance that allows you to keep moving forward.
